Further Practice for Reading 8 Passage 2
s1~a: Because of the use of the indefinite article here, it
is clear that a singular noun is required.~s2~c: Because of
the plural noun after the space in this case, the required ward must be an adjective.
It is important to remember, however, that nouns can function as adjectives.~s3~a:
This time the position of the definite article before the blank indicates that
a noun is needed and the verb form later in the sentence means that the noun
must be singular.~s4~c/e: This ward must describe 'the government's
lack of respect for the profession', so it has to be an adjective or possibly
a gerund.~s5~a/c: To complete the sentence a verb is probably
needed, in this case in the present continuous form. Alternatively, an adjective
would also fit here, but reference to the passage shows that it is the verb
form which fits the sense of the summary.~s6~c: Even if you
do not know the meaning of the word 'series', the presence of the indefinite
article before the blank tells you that it is a noun. Therefore, the missing
word must be an adjective.~s7~c The verb form before the blank
tells us that a descriptive word is required.
