Radiation can affect an organism by damaging which may then die or malfunction. If the affected in this way is small, the effect will not be too drastic and may not be noticeable. Alternatively, the may grow uncontrollably and form cancers, in which case the organism is likely to die.

If the DNA in a germ cell in the ovaries or testes is affected, any originating from that may display which can in turn be passed on to further offspring.
